About this Race
The Standard Chartered KL Marathon is the Malaysian capital's flagship race, a city course past the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and through the modern heart of Kuala Lumpur on broad roads and elevated flyovers. The profile is largely flat with a few bridge rises, but the equatorial heat and humidity dominate, demanding a very early start and disciplined cooling throughout. It draws a large regional field to a vibrant, fast-growing event. The flyovers add mild undulation, though the climate remains the defining adversary. It suits runners who want a glittering Southeast Asian cityscape and are ready to race smart against the tropical conditions rather than chase a fast clock.
Course Insight
Kuala Lumpur is an equatorial heat-and-humidity test, started before dawn to beat the worst of the tropical air, run on flat city roads and elevated flyovers. The climate, not the terrain, dictates everything, so pace conservatively and hydrate from the start. A cool-feeling early kilometre is a trap, not a promise. The flyovers add the only real undulation. Respect the humidity and the flat course stays manageable to the line.
Difficulty Breakdown
Mostly due to significant climbing (316m), tough late hills, challenging typical weather.

Race History
The Standard Chartered KL Marathon was first held in 2009 and quickly became Malaysia's flagship road race, touring the modern heart of Kuala Lumpur past the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. Defined by equatorial heat that forces a very early start, it built its character around the glittering cityscape rather than fast times. From its founding it grew into one of Southeast Asia's larger marathons. Run each year, it now draws a big regional field to the Malaysian capital.
